Bridging Continents for Climate Action: Highlights from the II EULAS Conference on EU–Latin America & Caribbean Cooperation

From March 23 to 25, PUC-Rio hosted the Second International Conference of the Jean Monnet EULAS Network, focused on EU–Latin America and Caribbean cooperation on climate and biodiversity governance. The three-day event brought together academics and practitioners through panels, workshops, and roundtables addressing climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, energy transitions, and environmental democracy. Key discussions highlighted the Amazon, climate justice, and multilateral challenges, alongside strategies to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. Featuring a keynote on the crisis of multilateralism, the conference fostered interdisciplinary dialogue and reinforced collaboration between regions on pressing global environmental issues.

From the 10th to the 12th of November 2025, the National University of Rosario (UNR) in Argentina hosted the First International Conference of the Jean Monnet EULAS Network on Trade, Investment, Finance and Sustainable Development. Bringing together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from 24 partner institutions across Europe and Latin America, the three-day event featured 12 panels, 2 workshops, 2 roundtables, and a keynote by Diana Tussie (FLACSO Argentina). Discussions ranged from the EU–Mercosur Agreement and the EU Green Deal's regulatory instruments to climate finance, geoeconomic rivalries, and renewable hydrogen cooperation, reflecting the growing complexity of bi-regional relations in a rapidly shifting global order.

The EU–CELAC Academic Forum, held in Bogotá on 6–7 November 2025 by Universidad de los Andes and the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, convened academics, policymakers, diplomats, and civil society to rethink bi-regional cooperation amid geopolitical fragmentation, democratic backsliding, and the climate crisis. Structured around six pillars—global governance, digital transition, human rights, decent work, climate action, and peace and security—the forum stressed translating academic knowledge into concrete policy proposals for the 2025 IV CELAC–EU Summit.
