EULAS Seminars: Between America and Europe

As part of the course "Narrative Experimentation in Spanish American Literature," taught by Dr. Dunia Gras (Master's Degree in Advanced Studies in Spanish and Spanish American Literature, Faculty of Philology and Communication, University of Barcelona), two seminars were held this spring exploring contemporary literary experimentation across the Spanish-speaking world.

Rewriting the Canon and Breaking Molds, Between Argentina and Spain

Author Fernanda García Lao led this workshop-style seminar on efforts to rewrite the literary canon and challenge established conventions within the Argentine and Spanish literary traditions. Drawing on her essays "El yo deforme" ("The Deformed Self") and "Mis dos hemisferios" ("My Two Hemispheres"), as well as her latest novel, Estación Saturno (2025), García Lao discussed how contemporary writers are redefining inherited literary forms without regard for national borders, pushing the boundaries of what is considered canonical.

The seminar ran over two sessions, on May 21 and May 28, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.

Beyond Narco-Fiction: Migrant Subjects Between Mexico, the U.S., and Spain

Writer Eduardo Ruiz Sosa led a second seminar examining migrant experiences and identities that move between Mexico, the United States, and Spain—looking beyond the narco-fiction genre that has come to dominate popular narratives about the region. Drawing on his recent novel El paisaje es un grito (2026), Ruiz Sosa invited participants to reflect, through creative writing practice and the relationship between phenomenon and event, on how literature can represent migration and displacement in more nuanced and complex ways.

This seminar also ran over two sessions, on May 26 and June 2, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.
