Alejandro Chehtman (Universidad Torcuato Di Tella), Alexandra Huneeus (University of Wisconsin–Madison), and Sergio Puig (European University Institute) present and discuss their edited volume Latin American International Law in the Twenty-First Century, examining how Latin American states engage with - and help shape - the international legal order amid contemporary global challenges.

 

We were also pleased to welcome Cecilia M. Bailliet (University of Oslo) as discussant, who offered insightful commentary situating the volume within broader debates on legal pluralism, regionalism, and the defense of international norms, with the discussion moderated by Joaquin Caprarulo (KU Leuven GGS and the LAC-EU Doctoral Network).

The Palgrave Macmillan Handbook of EU–Latin American Relations

EULAS Network hosted a webinar on The Palgrave Macmillan Handbook of EU–Latin American Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025), edited by José Antonio Sanahuja and Roberto Domínguez. The event explored the shared history and evolving ties between Europe and Latin America, from political and economic cooperation to human rights, technology, sustainability, and climate action. Lorena Ruano Gómez joined as discussant, highlighting the book’s key contributions.

Liquid Regionalism in the Americas – An Analysis of Contemporary Regional Developments

Bruno Theodoro Luciano (UNU-CRIS / São Paulo State University – UNESP, Brazil) discusses the concept of Liquid Regionalism and how it captures the fluid, flexible, and shifting nature of regional initiatives in the Americas. 

We were also delighted to welcome Andrea Ribeiro Hoffmann (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro – PUC-Rio, Brazil), who provided expert commentary and thoughtful reflections on this innovative framework for understanding Latin American and comparative regionalism.

The Political Economy of Industry Organizations and Mercosur's North-South Trade Negotiations

In this session, Nicolás Pose-Ferraro examines how the political economy dynamics of Brazil and Argentina have shaped the positions of Mercosur’s two largest economies in their trade negotiations with the European Union. The discussion focuses on how industrial sector preferences — particularly those of the distributive “losers” of the agreement — have influenced governmental stances toward a trade partnership with Europe over two decades of negotiations. Rethinking EU–LAC Relations Ahead of the CELAC–EU Summit 2025 | EULAS Network @ Casa Amèrica Catalunya

On September 16, 2025, a live roundtable was held at Casa Amèrica Catalunya, Barcelona, exploring the current state and future of EU–Latin America relations. Experts discussed key political, social, and economic challenges ahead of the EU–CELAC Summit 2025, offering insights into opportunities for deeper cooperation.
